A Republic of 7.5 million inhabitants in the heart of Central Amérca, situated between Guatemala , El Salvador and Nicaragua, bathed by the Caribbean sea in the North and the Pacific ocean on the other side. Hondurans are of diverse ethnic groups, including the Lencas, Chortis (Maya descendants), Garifunas, of African ancestry , Tolupanes and Misquitos. However the majority of the population is a mixture of Spanish and Indian called ¨mestizos¨ and speaks Spanish.
Honduras is home to the impressive mayan ruins of Copan, a city abandoned by the Maya sometime in the IX century and rediscovered by the Spaniards in the XVI century. You will see there the Stellae that tell of the ascencion of rulers, the temples and altars where victims were sacrificed to the gods.
Other places to visit as you travel in Honduras are the Bay Islands, famous for the coral reefs, diving and snorkeling, the colonial city of Comayagua, the beaches in Tela and La Ceiba and, if you are the adventurous type, the pristine jungle around Rio Platano, proposed as one of the wonders of the modern world.
