Vaccine Expected against Flu H1N1

The World Health Organization focuses on vaccine development against the pandemic of Flu A (H1N1), previously called swine flu. But it will be several months before it is tested and sent where it is needed.
Meanwhile the disease is spreading around the globe with around 11,000 cases in 41 countries and 85 deaths, 10 of them in the USA. In New York 23 schools have closed to prevent further spread of the epidemic, although some health officials say that measure is largerly uneffective.
No one knows what will happen in the next few months, but the real threat is that the current strain will mix with H5N1 avian flu and become even more virulent.

The Bay Islands

This is a group of three Islandas off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean. The largest of these is Roatán followed by Guanaja and then Utila. These islands are a tourist attraction because of the coral reefs, variety of fishes of beautiful colors, facilities of scuba diving and snorkeling. Further off the coast you will see and love the playful dolphins.
There are good hotels in the three islands and restaurants where you can taste good lobster, fish, and shrimp however you like it. Caribbean cruises stop in Roatan, but you can also get there using the TACA or Continental airlines from Los Angeles or Miami.
The Bay Islands used to be an English colony until 1861 when they were returned to the Honduras Republic. The local population is of mixed African descent and the majority speaks English and Spanish. Their favorite music is Reggae.

Why did the Maya disappear?

The question has fascinated scholars and the public since 19th century explorers began dsicovering ¨lost cities ¨in the Petén: How could one of the ancient worlds great civilizations simply dissolve?
Early speculation centered on sudden catastrophe, perhaps volcanism or an earthquake or a deadly hurricane. Or perhaps it was a mysterious disease untraceable today _something like the Black Death in medieval Europe or the smallpox that wiped out Native American Populations at the dawn of the colonial age. Moderns researchers have discarded these one-event theories, however, because the collapse extended over at least 200 years. ¨There isn´t any single factor that everybody agrees on¨says Southern Illinois University´s Prudence M. Rice

HONDURAS

A Republic of 7.5 million inhabitants in the heart of Central Amérca, situated between Guatemala , El Salvador and Nicaragua, bathed by the Caribbean sea in the North and the Pacific ocean on the other side. Hondurans are of diverse ethnic groups, including the Lencas, Chortis (Maya descendants), Garifunas, of African ancestry , Tolupanes and Misquitos. However the majority of the population is a mixture of Spanish and Indian called ¨mestizos¨ and speaks Spanish.

Honduras is home to the impressive mayan ruins of Copan, a city abandoned by the Maya sometime in the IX century and rediscovered by the Spaniards in the XVI century. You will see there the Stellae that tell of the ascencion of rulers, the temples and altars where victims were sacrificed to the gods.

Other places to visit as you travel in Honduras are the Bay Islands, famous for the coral reefs, diving and snorkeling, the colonial city of Comayagua, the beaches in Tela and La Ceiba and, if you are the adventurous type, the pristine jungle around Rio Platano, proposed as one of the wonders of the modern world.
